This month's stories:

JANE’S SUCCESSOR - Susan Houston

Susan Houston takes over from Jane Langley, who has moved away and given up the post after six years of devoted work for us.

A former district nursing sister with Hounslow and Spelthorne Community and Mental Health Trust Susan lives in Ashford.

Early in her career, after gaining her nursing qualifications, she spent seven months travelling the world with a companion. “We travelled in Nepal, trekked in the Himalayas, visited Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia,” she recalled. “It was a wonderful time and we had lots of adventures. We had one rucksack and £4,000 between us and somehow we made the money last.”

After secondary education at St. Teresa’s convent school for girls at Sunbury, Susan trained at the Ashford hospital school of nursing, going on to work at the hospital as a staff nurse. She later worked at St. Mark’s and Dulwich hospitals.

“I am very much looking forward to my work with TALK. As a nurse I have a good understanding of the isolation and frustration that can be experienced by those recovering from stroke,” she says.

Susan has been busy since taking over, having visited the groups and undergone a baptism of fire by taking part in the Tuesday morning group pantomime!
