DAPHNE RINGS IN THE NEW YEAR WITH AWARD |
Congratulations to co-founder of TALK, Daphne Bell, who was made MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the New Year's Honours List.
TALK chairman Michael Hawtin said: "This is well-deserved recognition of the contribution Daphne has made to the cause of stroke recovery over many years. In addition to having been chairman of TALK Daphne has successfully led the Guildford afternoon group." Rev. Judy Potter, a former TALK chairman, added: "She was a real inspiration when everything seemed bleak and was determined to support recoverers." Speaking soon after the news of her award was made public Daphne said: "When I heard the OBE called 'Others blooming efforts' I decided that this MBE should be 'Members blooming efforts' -- blooming referring to flowers. TALK's successful expansion during 30 years is due to over 100 wonderful volunteers who support the same number of courageous recoverers and their caring families. "From our first days we have had experienced and dedicated committee members and three splendid coordinators. This is recognition of our efforts starting from 30 or so volunteers and the speech and language therapists of the original NHS service who refused to abandon their friends when funds ran out and instead, with help from Cornhill Insurance, formed TALK." |
